“There is one other embarrassing secret I must reveal, something I have never admitted to anyone. Though we are grateful for the affection 30 Rock has received from critics and hipsters, we were actually trying to make a hit show.” - Tina Fey, Bossypants

30 Rock, at its best, is like a vaudeville show, where Tina Fey and her collaborators will do just about anything to entertain you and make you laugh. They’ll toss in some relatively sophisticated jokes for the people who watch this show and want to hear satirical humor or political gags. They’ll toss in really broad stuff to show that they both have a healthy respect for tradition and know they can make you laugh via slapstick or something similar. And they’ll do the most random and absurdist stuff, all the better to make you laugh by weirding you out.

JENNA: Oh, Liz, it’s always been my dream to marry a prince, like a modern day Cinderella story.
LIZ: Well, maybe I’m Cinderella this time.
JENNA: No, Liz, Cinderella is blonde. You can be Snow White and party with the little people.30 ROCK 1.12 — “Black Tie”

LIZ: Maybe Donald is Tracy’s son, because maybe Tracy is sixty.
PETE: No, that’s ridiculous.
LIZ: Think about it. He can’t rap, he has diabetes, a lot of his friends are dead-
PETE: He falls asleep in chairs, he doesn’t know how to use a computer, he’s always mad at the TV-
TOOFER: His favorite show is NCIS.
LIZ: He might be seventy!
